About

MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COLLEGE

BACKGROUND

MOOC SA is an ambitious project that aims to create an online college full of free courses offered through the goodwill of professionals. It is a good platform for course designers to try out innovations in terms of course delivery. The acronym MOOC was adapted from the fast rising area of interest “Massive Open Online Courses”. It is a welcome coincidence that the word “college” does not change the letters in the acronym. The college will host a collection of free courses that have been produced by professionals across South Africa, Africa and beyond. Depending on the trajectory that higher education is going, it might happen that a certain collection of courses will lead to a particular recognised qualification. However, this college’s focus is not on recognition, instead great emphasis is put on (free) Learning. If we can help you learn something, then we have achieved, at-least, one of our objectives.

AIM OF COLLEGE

The aim of MOOC SA is to increase the sharing of knowledge and promote (free) learning through massive open online courses. I place free in brackets because the nature of freeness has conditions, which are the site user will need to have some form of internet access and a device to access it. As the world taps into the MOOC phenomena, I hope to receive contributions from academics and freelance experts in the form of short and/or long online courses that can be accessed for free by willing learners or knowledge seekers.

VISION

To be South Africa’s biggest free online college offering the widest variety of courses

MISSION

  • Create a platform for learning that is easy to navigate.
  • Create a platform for learning the supports self-directed learning.
  • Create a platform for learning that enhances networked learning.
  • Seek wide participation from diverse disciplines and experts.
  • Encourage research of the platform and/or the courses.
  • Interrogate platform and course quality issues
  • Obtain a sustainable funding model to help maintain the website.
  • Create a network of participants {instructors/course creators & project drivers/researchers} to drive the project.

FOR LEARNERS

Learners that register on the site can benefit from the plethora of free courses that the site hosts. When an individual wishes to start a new career or change career, it would be useful to start with a free course so as to explore if indeed one is making a correct career choice. Learners can also build networks, that is meeting new people of similar interest and thus learn from their peers. Learners can share their learning through the discussion forums and the wiki tools. Once learners are confident enough, they are also free to apply to be an instructor and create their own courses.

FOR INSTRUCTORS/COURSE CREATORS

Course creators/instructors have the opportunity to test out their skills in creating online courses, conducting pilot runs checking their efficacy. This platform is great for those that wish to ease in to the online course and distance learning design arena. Above all, lecturers/professors (faculty) have the opportunity to present and share their knowledge in the form of short and/or long courses or workshops. The feedback you will receive poses an opportunity for faculty to improve their teaching and learning practice mainly course design. Course creators can explore various models of online course design and are free to conduct research on the learning experience and model efficacy.

FOR RESEARCHERS

The platform offers an opportunity for instructional design, learning facilitation and educational technology researchers to explore the learning phenomena. The environment is safe in that experimentation is being conducted on a voluntary basis. The fact that learners have not paid any financial fee to access the course enables the course researchers to explore various models of delivery without risking the learners’ financial loss. I would still encourage researchers to alert learners when a course or learning experience is under inquiry.

FOR THOSE WANTING TO JOIN DRIVE THE PROJECT

I humbly encourage individuals to join me on this journey. This project can only achieve its vision with the support of differing mind-sets and ideas that working collectively as a team. Working alone on such a huge ambitious project will be a challenge, and thus I hope many players will sail with me through this journey. Whether treading the calm seas or the tidal waves, the journey will be easier with a team by your side. Although the destination is still a dream away,   I hope that there will be loads of fulfilment along the way and at end of this long journey.

FOR SPONSORS OF THIS PROJECT

I would like to request any kind of financial or technical support sponsorship. Sponsors have the opportunity of contributing to something big, innovative and relevant to our education environment. There are always great feelings of fulfilment knowing that you contributed to something that changed the way we conduct or day to day business. If sponsors are a company or an organisation, they too can benefit in that their employees can learn for free on the site and thus creating new models of capacity and staff development.  All sponsors branding material will be showcased on this site as a sign of appreciation. Sponsors are also free to request specific research to be conducted on the website, and they can also sponsor any research project or design improvement projects within the website. Any form of contribution (financial, technical skills, and technological infrastructure) will be greatly appreciated.

LICENSING

Once material has been published on this website it becomes licenced under an open license (CC), hence your contribution will be treated as open educational resources.
